Student opportunity in oceanography

About the project

The distribution of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in surface waters of the Saint Lawrence System (SLS) is experiencing major long-term changes due mainly to climate-mediated variations on runoff, coastal disintegration, and dynamics of harmful algae (HA). These ongoing disturbances are expected to affect future tourism activities (e.g., whale watching) in estuarine waters due to changes on water turbidity and associated effects on primary production and food webs. In addition, shellfish farms in the Gulf of St. Lawrence would be likely affected by a greater presence of HA events. Thus, there is an urgent need to characterize the long-term patterns of SPM in different spatial domains of the SLS. The objective of this two-year project is to evaluate the complementary use of passive and active optical measurements for estimating the concentration of SPM in one study area of the SLS and for the period 2006-2016. These remote sensing products will be calculated on the basis of regional visible-NIR spaceborne algorithms and satellite-based laser measurements. Time series and spatial distributions of SPM will be related to coastline retreat, wind and local circulation patterns.

Financial assistance

A scholarship is available for 2 years. A scholarship is also available from ISMER to pay for the increased tuition fees that apply to foreign students.
