La majorité des bivalves marins benthiques ont un cycle larvaire pélagique dont le passage à la vie benthique est caractérisé par une métamorphose tissulaire et morphologique importante. Cette métamorphose caractérisée par une première étape de fixation leur permet de développer les tissus afin d’adapter leur comportement au nouvel habitat benthique. Les mécanismes régissant le succès de la métamorphose et du recrutement sont importants aussi bien en écologie, pour comprendre la structure des communautés benthiques et mieux gérer les stocks naturels, qu’en aquaculture afin d’assurer l’approvisionnement en juvéniles. Toutefois, peu d’informations sont disponibles sur les mécanismes régissant les processus de métamorphose assurant le succès de cette transformation biologique majeure. Nos récents travaux, comme ceux de plusieurs laboratoires dans le monde, démontrent de plus en plus l’extraordinaire plasticité de cette phase métamorphorphique. En effet, les larves de bivalves marins ont une capacité très importante à retarder leur métamorphose pendant une période qui peut dépasser plusieurs semaines. Lorsqu’elles sont nouvellement métamorphosées, les jeunes post-larves peuvent également retourner dans la colonne d’eau et réaliser des migrations secondaires. Toutefois, les mécanismes régissant la mise en place de cette plasticité phénotypique et comportementale sont encore mal compris, les coûts énergétiques et métaboliques inconnus, leur influence pour l’établissement des recrues et le maintien des populations ne sont pas bien définis. Une meilleure compréhension des mécanismes régissant leur survie, incluant la condition physiologique, les mécanismes moléculaires, la qualité de la nourriture et les conditions environnementales devient donc primordiale, particulièrement dans un contexte de changement global.

Generally, benthic marine bivalves have a pelagic larval cycle following by a benthic life characterized by important tissue and morphological chanegs. This metamorphosis is characterized by a first step of settlement allows them to develop tissues adapted to their new benthic habitat. The mechanisms governing the success of metamorphosis and recruitment are important both in ecology, to understand the structure of benthic communities and in aquaculture to increase productivity and supply of juveniles. However, little information is available on the mechanisms governing the process of metamorphosis ensuring the success of this major biological transformation. Our recent works, like those of several laboratories around the world, show the extraordinary plasticity of this metamorphorphic phase. Indeed, the larvae of marine bivalves have a very strong ability to delay metamorphosis for a period that may exceed several weeks. Furthermore, newly metamorphosed young post-larvae can also return to the water column by secondary migration processes. However, the mechanisms governing the establishment of this phenotypic and behavioral plasticity are poorly understood, metabolic energy costs unknown and their influence on the recruitment success not well defined. A better understanding of the mechanisms governing the metamosphosis, including the physiological condition, the molecular mechanisms, food quality and environmental conditions becomes essential, especially in a context of global change.
