Sujet

Océanographie de l’écosystème pélagique depuis les processus physiques jusqu’aux baleines ; son fonctionnement à diverses échelles spatiales et temporelles, ses structures d’agrégation de la biomasse et d’échanges trophiques intensifs à travers la chaîne trophique, les zones d’importance écologique et biologiques et les habitats critiques, particulièrement des espèces menacées, dans le but de comprendre les mécanismes fondamentaux régissant l’existence et la persistance à moyen et long terme de ces « hot spots » de l’écosystème marin, et de cerner les facteurs qui les régissent et qui sont susceptibles d’être affectés par les fluctuations et tendances climatiques ainsi que les pressions anthropiques.

Approche océanographique de la mesure des variables environnementales caractérisant les masses d’eau et leurs déplacements selon le continuum d’échelles spatio-temporelles, méthodologie hydroacoustique mulltifréquence pour la détection, la classification, la cartographie et l’estimation de la biomasse de zooplancton et de poissons dans le volume tridimensionnel, méthodes d’acoustique passive pour le monitorage des mammifères marins par le suivi de leurs vocalisations spécifiques sur un réseau d’hydrophones et l’étude de la pollution sonore sous-marine, l’application de la théorie de l’échantillonnage, d’analyse et d’estimation géostatistiques pour ces variables fortement autocorrélées dans l’espace et le temps, la modélisation océanographique et acoustique avec des collaborateurs(trices), et le développement technologique d’instrumentation et logiciels avec des partenaires.

Lieux

Estuaire et Golfe du Saint-Laurent, incluant le fjord du Saguenay et particulièrement le Parc Marin Saguenay–Saint-Laurent, le complexe hudsonien de la baie et du détroit d’Hudson, de l’Ungava et du bassin Foxe, l’Arctique canadien de l’Est, du Centre et de l’Ouest en collaboration avec le réseau Arctic Net ; ainsi que d’autres milieux océaniques dans le cadre de collaborations nationales et internationales.

Exemple

Travail en équipe multidisciplinaire sur des sujets ciblés par les programmes de recherche, tels : l’étude du système océanographique responsable de l’agrégation pérenne du krill et des baleines dans le Parc Marin Saguenay–Saint-Laurent à la tête du Chenal Laurentien ; la dynamique complexe des migrations verticales nycthémérales, en particulier du krill, et son rôle dans son agrégation à des sites privilégiés de l’écosystème ; la cartographie et l’estimation hydroacoustique du capelan dans le Parc Marin, proie ciblée par plusieurs mammifères, et son déplacement par les courants de marée à la tête du Chenal, son agrégation aux fronts associés à l’upwelling de la nappe intermédiaire froide, particulièrement l’énergique front de subduction de celle-ci dans le fjord du Saguenay à Tadoussac, un habitat intensément fréquenté par les bélugas ; le développement de la méthodologie, la technologie et l’algorithmique de monitorage des mammifères marins par leurs vocalisations sur de grandes périodes dans le Saint-Laurent et le Nord Canadien ; la distribution et l’agrégation de la morue arctique, espèce fourragère clé de l’écosystème arctique ; le développement d’hydrophones autonomes et de bouées intelligentes pour la détection, l’identification et la localisation automatisée des baleines avec télécommunication en temps réel ; l’estimation du bruit de la navigation dans le Parc Marin, le golfe du Saint-Laurent, l’Arctique et le Subarctique canadiens, la pollution sonore associée aux navires et le masquage des vocalisations des baleines ; l’impact sonore de l’exploration pétrolière par sismique à canons à air ainsi que de la construction d’infrastructures portuaires, tels les terminaux pour superméthaniers.
